Well,
it turns out, hands are repositories of information interesting
to our own culture and, as it turns out, the ancient practitioners
of palmistry were probably not far off in their interpretations
of the information, by our haughty standards. In fact, all that
was needed to make palmistry relevant to our times was just that:
updating.
Take
out the emphasis on doom and gloom. Find practical applications.
Identify the positives and the perplexities that make up the uniqueness
of life for the owner of each set of hands. Invite recognition,
emboldening the owner toward purposeful pursuit of what is most
satisfying. Ferret out very personal qualities and traits, scrutinizing
how these have been applied. Suggest choices for shaping the future,
understanding who is in fact in control of one's life and destiny.
Realize also that the appearance of specific data in the hands
(coded into the shapes and lines, the relatives sizes of the fingers,
the colors, the grooves of the skin and other variables) is no
more of less mysterious and wonderful that the coordination of
eye and brain to see or than the ability of genetic typing to
be passed to offspring.
While
there are few practitioners of palmistry in our day, the scope
of knowledge and the opportunities it offers are stronger than
ever. It is fitting that we should resurrect the work of ancestors,
making it our own and bridging ourselves to future generations
who may conduct their lives in open pursuit of personal understanding.
